About Bowen Island Golf Club: Bowen Island Golf Club is a scenic and challenging 9-hole public golf course (and one-acre putting and chipping facility) located on beautiful Bowen Island, just a short ferry ride from Vancouver, B.C. Nestled among lush forests and rolling landscapes, the course provides an exceptional golfing experience for residents and visitors alike. The club fosters a welcoming and community-driven atmosphere while offering a high-quality course and well-maintained facilities.
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Golf Course Superintendent to oversee the maintenance and enhancement of our golf course. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader with a deep understanding of turf management, irrigation, and golf course operations. This is a full-time, year-round position offering the opportunity to shape the future of our course while working in a unique and picturesque environment.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Board of Directors and working closely with the Operations Manager, the Golf Course Superintendent is responsible for all aspects of golf course maintenance and agronomy. This includes managing turf health, irrigation, personnel, budgeting, and environmental sustainability. The successful candidate will take pride in maintaining excellent playing conditions and aesthetic appeal while fostering a positive team culture.
Key Responsibilities:
● Oversee the maintenance of greens, fairways, tee boxes, bunkers, rough, and practice facility to ensure high-quality playing conditions year-round.
● Supervise, hire, train, and motivate the maintenance team, including staff and volunteers.
● Develop and manage the annual maintenance budget, including forecasting for equipment repairs, capital projects, and seasonal needs.
● Operate and maintain golf course equipment, including mowers, sprayers, and irrigation systems.
● Ensure compliance with all environmental and safety regulations, including pesticide and fertilizer applications.
● Implement best practices for turf management, aeration, irrigation scheduling, and pest control.
● Coordinate with club leadership on course improvement projects, long-term planning, and member communications regarding maintenance activities.
● Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, chemical applications, and equipment servicing.
● Manage and maintain a reliable irrigation system to optimize water usage and sustainability.
● Collaborate with the Operations Manager to ensure a seamless experience for golfers and members.
Qualifications & Skills:
● Degree or diploma in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field (preferred but not required with relevant experience).
● Minimum of 3 years of experience in a Golf Course Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent role. Other candidates may apply, but priority will be given to those in active superintendent or assistant positions
● Pesticide Applicator Certification and knowledge of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) practices.
● Strong leadership skills with experience managing staff, volunteers, and contractors.
● Proven ability to develop and manage operating and capital budgets.
● Experience with golf course equipment maintenance and irrigation systems.
● Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing weather and course conditions.
● Strong communication and organizational skills.
● Passion for the game of golf and an understanding of course playability.
Compensation & Benefits:
● Competitive annual salary ($75,000 – $105,000), based on experience and qualifications.
