Champion Lakes Golf Course, located in Fruitvale, BC is seeking a highly motivated, detail-oriented, and experienced individual to join our team as the Assistant Superintendent. Working directly under the guidance and mentorship of the Golf Course Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent will play a critical role in the maintenance and management of our 9-hole championship course and practice facilities. This position is structured as a developmental, fast-track opportunity toward a future Golf Course Superintendent position, providing hands-on agronomic experience, leadership training, and progressive management responsibilities. Key Responsibilities
The Assistant Superintendent's primary duties will include, but are not limited to:


Agronomic Management:

  • Assisting the Superintendent in the planning and execution of all course maintenance programs, including fertilization, pest control, and disease management.
  • Overseeing and performing calibration of all spray and granular application equipment.
  • Monitoring turf health conditions daily and proactively identifying and diagnosing issues related to soil, water, insects, and disease.

 

Staff Leadership & Training:

  • Directly supervising, scheduling, and training the maintenance crew, ensuring all tasks are completed efficiently, safely, and to the highest standards.
  • Promoting a culture of safety, ensuring adherence to all safety protocols and proper use of equipment.


Course Operations:

  • Managing irrigation system, including daily programming, operation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation heads, piping, and controls.
  • Operating and training staff on specialized equipment (e.g., aerifiers, vertical mowers, topdressers, seeders).
  • Ensuring the quality and consistency of all playing surfaces (greens, tees, fairways, bunkers).


Maintenance of equipment:

  • Assist Superintendent in maintaining all equipment in the fleet including hand and power equipment and maintain accurate records of all equipment repairs.


Administrative Duties:

  • Maintaining accurate records of chemical/fertilizer applications, equipment repairs, fuel used, and labor hours.
  • Assisting in budget planning and inventory management for supplies and equipment.


Communication:

  • Maintaining effective communication with the Superintendent, Pro Shop, and other departments to ensure seamless operations and course readiness.


Qualifications
Preferred:

  • A minimum of 2-3 years of progressive experience in golf course maintenance, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • A two- or four-year degree or certificate in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of turfgrass cultural practices, pest management, and irrigation systems.
  • Proficiency in the safe operation of golf course maintenance equipment.
  • Mechanical knowledge and ability to repair all equipment used at the golf course is an asset.
  • Possession of or the ability to obtain a Pesticide Applicator License within 60 days of hire.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Experience with a Rain Bird irrigation system.
  • Familiarity with record-keeping software (word, excel) for chemical applications and budgeting.

Salary and Benefits

  • Annual Salary: $33,000 – $43,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. (8-month Salary)
